I love packing for holidays. The challenge is to fit everything you need into that suitcase, being able to close it, and getting your luggage within the allowed weight limit. To do that, you need to plan your days and bring with you versatile items that preferably can meet more than one need.

Start with your skincare and makeup.

Essential 1: a jar of Vaseline

Essential 2: a lipstick in a natural shade

In winter, you need serious moisture - for face, hands, lips and all. You can bring a travel set, but if you really are short of space and do not have an acne problem, bring with you a small jar of Vaseline instead.

You can apply Vaseline on lips to prevent chapping. Use it on hands and feet to prevent chapping. Apply a small amount all over your body right after patting yourself dry following a shower; this locks in the moisture. If your skin can take it, apply a little all over your face to keep your face from drying.

Bring along a lipstick in a flattering rose, coral, or peach shade, and use that as a cream blush (apply with fingertips) as well as a lipstick. Note: this is only for people who do not break out easily. Avoid using lipstick on cheeks if you are prone to pimples or have oily skin.

Not everyone can tolerate Vaseline on the face and lipstick on cheeks. If you cannot get all the skincare and makeup you need from a travel set, or if you find a makeup pouch too bulky, you can take the contents out and put them in a compartment in your bag. However, if your makeup pouch is large enough, you can make it double as hand luggage to carry other essentials you want easy access to on your journey.

Essential 3: thermal underwear

What should you wear? On any winter holiday, regardless of what you wear on the outside, you need thermal underwear to lock in your body heat. Get at least three sets and some detergent (in a bottle with screw-on cap to avoid leakage) so that you can wash it between each wear. If you have no time for laundry, then bring a set for each day of your trip.

Essential 4: your favorite jeans

Bring at least two pairs of jeans, one to wear, the other in the wash. Alternatively, pack your favorite bottom made of denim, wool, or a thick, warm material. If you intend to engage in winter sports, get the necessary pants for your sport.

Essential 5: a jersey dress

For the times when you want dress like a girl, nothing beats a jersey dress. Get warm tights and wear with your dress to keep your legs from freezing.

Essential 6: a warm jacket with a touch of fur.

Faux fur or the real thing, you decide. That fur jacket adds a luxurious element to your look. It might get you past that snooty bouncer, so your holiday will not be spoiled because of dress coat rules.

Essential 7: a pair of thick-heeled boots.

You might be warm from head to ankles, but if you do not protect your feet with thick soles from the snow or ice beneath, the cold could make you miserable.
