When should you book travel insurance? This is one of the most frequently-contested and ferociously-debated questions in travel circles. In the end, it comes down to what sort of travel insurance policy you are looking to take out, as much as anything else.

Truth be told, travel is different in many things to many people. The frequent business traveler is a different creature than the impulsive soul that decides to jet off to Miami in winter because he or she simply has had enough of dear old, rain swept Britain.

Then again, you might be that once-in-a-lifetime dream tripper, with sights set on a family reunion in Australia or the US. Others might simply decide to take the caravan over to Europe for a fortnight once a year. Different strokes for different folks.

Whatever your needs, there are probably many things you can safely travel without, but insurance most certainly is not one of them.

For the business traveler, if you're pretty set in your ways and you know that your yearly routine is going to consist of shuttling back and forth between the United Kingdom and a variety of different European cities, it's best to start shopping for a good policy three to four weeks before your initial departure date. This gives you time not only to look at the prices but also, more importantly, to read the small print and make sure the policy fits like a glove.

This isn't fun. I'd compare it to struggling through waist-high treacle - but it has to be done. Even if your company covers you with a corporate policy, it might be wise to look into having something a little more substantial, just in case.

For many people traveling the world on a yearly schedule, you can do worse than booking a multi-trip policy at the start of the New Year. I say this because it's as much psychological as anything else. There is real peace of mind to be had in knowing that you are safely provided for from the first day of the year to the last. Again, give it a few hours of on-line research or perusing the newspapers before you make a final decision.

For Europe, I'd go with a variation on this theme and start looking once you have a definite date for your travels. There are so many policies out there that sifting through them all is akin to trench warfare. Go with what you think is best for you and once you have reached a decision, book it there and then.
