Most people want to experience nature at its most beautiful when they go walking. USA holidays allow you to do just that, and one of the best places to visit is the Rocky Mountains National Park. The park is very popular with visitors, welcoming over 3 million people every year. Full of beautiful valleys and forests, it also has some massive mountains, with 74 peaks over 12,000 feet.

There are plenty of activities for visitors in its 265,000 acres, which are very well preserved - including horseback trails, rock climbing, fishing, camping, and skiing in the winter. However, one of the most popular is hiking.

Hiking

The Rocky Mountains National Park boasts over 350 miles of hiking trails, making it a key hiking destination for anyone who is keen on walking. With stunning peaks, beautiful lakes and waterfalls, and excellent views, hiking here offers opportunities for beginners and very advanced hikers, so there is something for everyone.

Things to Remember

USA authorities insist that you have a backcountry permit if you are going to be staying overnight, so you should arrange this in advance. You should also be aware of sudden weather changes, and take lots of food and water whenever you go hiking. Be aware of your abilities, and be especially careful in winter where deep snow affects much of the park. Consider the many advantages of traveling with a walking group and an experienced leader, as it will free you up to relax and enjoy the experience more with everything arranged for you.

Visiting the Park

The gateway to the park is Estes Park, a village in Colorado 75 miles from Denver, where you will find lots of shops and restaurants. The park is open all year, but remember that in the winter months the access may not be as good. For example, the Trail Ridge Road, which is over 12,000 feet high and 45 miles long, is normally closed from November to May

Highlights

There are a number of attractions in Rocky Mountains National Park. You should try to see:

- Bear Lake
- Longs Peak
- Nymph Lake
- Bierstadt Lake
- Deer Ridge Junction
- Fern Falls
- Glacier Gorge

Also watch out for herds of elk, moose, and mountain goats that you may be lucky enough to spot.

Plan Your Trip to the Rockies

Rocky Mountains National Park is one of the best places to visit for anyone who enjoys serious walking. USA national parks are excellent destinations for anyone who wants to enjoy fantastic scenery and getting away into the wilderness, so make a trip to the Rocky Mountains and see it for yourself.

It has long been my belief that in times of great stress, such as a 4-day vacation, the thin veneer of family wears off almost at once, and we are revealed in our true personalities. -- Shirley Jackson
