People often travel to various island resorts in the Maldives, but there are many reasons why a stay in Malé is highly recommended. The bustling island is home to roughly one third of all inhabitants of the Maldives, and it has a lot to offer. Malé is one of the largest and most vibrant islands in the Maldives. The bustling island is home to roughly one third of all inhabitants of the Maldives and has even been artificially enlarged to allow for the ever-growing population. If you want to get a good feel for the people and the culture of the area, it's always a good idea to explore the local markets that sell everything from fruit and vegetables to local handiwork. The local fish market is one of the most thrilling sights to behold. Every afternoon the fishermen haul in their huge catches of fish (predominantly tuna). This abundance of fresh fish means that the standard of food you will be eating during your time in Malé will be exceptionally high. As you will no doubt realize as soon as you arrive in Malé, there are no natural beaches on the island. If you want to experience some of the picturesque beaches that adorn the front of postcards, you will have to travel off the island to one of the numerous resorts around the Maldives. The local people of Malé however, have not forgotten their desire for recreational pursuits and have built artificial beaches. This can be a great way to stay in the city and unwind, while still having some semblance of being in a country that is renowned for its beaches. There are many heritage sites across the island. Malé is a fairly small place, so you can easily manage to see most of these sites. The mosques are of particular interest, and document the religious history of the island. By far the most enchanting has to be the Friday Mosque, which is constructed primarily of coral stone. The carved coral is a truly magnificent demonstration of the local handiwork, featuring carvings and complex patterns. Malé is a dry city, thus bars and restaurants cannot serve alcohol. There are still plenty of very nice places to eat and hang out, however. Shisha bars are probably the most popular hangout spots for the young inhabitants of the city. Should you feel the urge to drink, you can always travel to one of the many resorts around the Maldives where drinking is permitted. It is generally best to visit during the peak season (December - April) to guarantee the best weather conditions. Malé flights are in great demand during this time however, so be sure to book early to avoid disappointment.
