Top 10 Travel Safety and Security Tips

   By Alton

This article presents a quick reference list of the top 10 most important travel security tips to keep travelers safe abroad. Be sure to read it carefully before you plan your next trip. It could save you aggravation - or even save your life!

What are the most important Top 10 Travel Safety Tips that I can recommend for travelers going abroad?

1) Carry a copy of your passport with you while in country. Store your original passport in a safe back at the hotel so that it will not be stolen or lost.

2) Travel in large groups rather than alone. Criminals abroad love to prey on lone victims rather than large groups.

3) Choose a safe and secure hotel rather than a cheap one. Often, low budget hotels or cheap hostels have little or no security. This increases travelers' risks for hotel burglaries and/or thefts.

4) Remember to leave contact information (i.e., email address or phone number) with family and friends so that they can get in touch with you abroad. Put loved ones' worries to rest and make sure that they can reach you if needed. Otherwise, they may become distraught and unnecessarily contact your embassy or the local police in country.

5) Refrain from carrying large bags while touring. Often, travelers carrying these items are targeted by criminals because the criminals know that travelers are carrying travel documents, money, credit/debit cards, and other expensive belongings on them in the bags.

6) Contact the police immediately and report it if you are victimized. Most crimes committed go unreported to the police. Reporting a crime after you, as a traveler, has been victimized may help authorities arrest the perpetrator and prevent others from becoming victims at the hands of the same criminal.

7) Be aware of your surroundings and avoid social distractions (e.g., cell phones and MP3 players). Criminals view distracted travelers as easy targets because these victims are most likely unable to identify criminals after incidents.

8) Surrender your valuables if confronted by thieves. They can be replaced; your life cannot. In the event of a robbery, criminals are less likely to harm victims who do not offer resistance.

9) Be extra careful when using public transportation abroad, especially crowded buses. Criminals often use these buses to pickpocket foreigners. Furthermore, buses are often the targets of hijackings and mass robberies by road bandits in foreign countries.

10) Get sound security advice by contacting your embassy or consulate and speaking with someone in the security office or citizen services section. There are many people - like traveling journalists and fellow travelers - who offer travel safety advice; however, these people may have experience in traveling but lack law enforcement or security experience. These professionals are more qualified and experienced to provide appropriate and correct travel safety advice.

Furthermore, check out your country's foreign ministry webpage. Here travelers will often find information about the security and crime situation in countries they intend to visit.

Sincerity is like traveling on a plain, beaten road, which commonly brings a man sooner to his journey's end than by-ways, in which men often lose themselves. -- Tillotsen
