Here are a few tips to ensure that you will be able to move smoothly through security checkpoints with the minimum of hassle. These days, security checks are getting more stringent and following these tips can help you move smoothly through the various checkpoints you will encounter.

• First make sure you review the list of prohibited items you are not allowed to bring through the security checkpoint. If you are caught with any prohibited item, it will raise plenty of questions that you will have to answer as well as the inconvenience and embarrassment of having all your bags thoroughly searched while everyone looks on.

• Make sure to pack your expensive goods in your carry-on luggage - such as jewelry, cash, and laptops. This allows you to keep a close eye on these valuables and you won't have to worry that they might become lost if the airline happens to lose your luggage on the way to your destination.

• Taping your business card to the bottom of your laptop and filling out your luggage tag with your name and contact information can help get your valuables returned to you quickly if you happen to walk off and leave them lying somewhere.

• Be prepared to demonstrate that your laptop can turn on when you are passing through security and put your entire pocket contents in the trays provided so they can go through the x-ray scanner while you walk through the metal detector.

• Avoid wearing things that contain metal, or you risk being detained at the security checkpoint and given a good going over with their metal detecting wand.

• Try to wear thin-soled shoes that do not contain heels, as they might raise suspicion that prohibited items could be smuggled in them. Lots of footwear can require additional searching even if they don't trip the metal detector, so it is best not to give the security people cause for suspicion.

• Carry all film in your carry-on baggage, as the scanners at the ticket counter could damage any undeveloped film.

• Make sure to declare all ammunitions and firearms that you pack and be sure to pack them in your checked baggage.

• Make sure to bring unwrapped gifts through security checkpoints, as you run the risk of having to unwrap them if security asks you to. Wrap them once you arrive at your destination or ship them ahead of time with a courier service - which will also save you space in your luggage.

• Keep your passport and boarding pass handy. You will need to produce these items a few times as you pass through security checkpoints.

• Packing loose items such as jewelry, cell phones, and keys in clear plastic bags will help when you have to pick everything up once you pass through the checkpoint.
