Student Travel on a Budget: How to Find the Good Deals

   By Wantotravel

With most of the major airlines raising fares and imposing seemingly endless fees for checked baggage, seats with more leg room, and even water, it may seem that there are no more good deals to be found. Not true! You just have to know where to look.

There are still some deals out there for students and other budget travelers. You just have to know where to look. Unfortunately, a simple Internet search will not necessarily find you the deals you are looking for, as many of the so-called deal sites are thin on offerings, so you will have to do some research and be savvy.

One of the least known ways to fly inexpensively as a student is to fly standby. Although most student standby programs have been eliminated by airlines trying to increase their revenues, AirtTran still has a student standby program. The rules are simple. If you are between the ages of 18 and 22, you qualify to participate. All you need to do is arrive at the AirTran ticketing counter at least two hours before the flight to find out if any seats are available.

Keep in mind that standby flights may not be available when you arrive at the airport, and if you fly standby, you are not allowed to check any baggage, so be sure to adhere to all TSA guidelines for carry-on luggage when packing for a standby flight.

Another airline that frequently offers deals to students is the German airline Lufthansa. The Generation Fly program is a student-only discount program geared toward US students. To qualify for student discounts, which currently include a one-way flight to London for $338 plus fees and taxes (based on a round trip purchase), Lufthansa requires you to register with your .edu or .k12[State].us email address. Once you register with a valid email address, you will regularly receive updates on current student travel deals. Other benefits include one free date change on a student fare and access to their extensive European travel network.

If flying standby is too risky and being tied to only one airline too restricting, consider using a student- or youth-centered travel agency. One of the oldest and most respected student travel agencies is STA Travel. In business for over 30 years, STA boasts over 6 million users a year and branches in 400 locations around the world.

STA works with many airlines to publicize student travel deals as well as arranging for accommodations and tours. In addition to cheap airfare, STA offers discount cards, global mobile phones, and travel insurance.

If you are a truly adventurous student under the age of 26, with strong writing and photography skills, an interest in journalism, have some extra time on your hands, and a strong case of the travel bug, you might even consider applying for the STA World Traveler Internship program. While only two applicants are accepted a year, if you are one of the lucky ones, you can travel the world at the expense of STA while boosting your resume creating writing samples and videos that will give you an edge in an increasingly difficult job market and an unforgettable experience.

Students can often find great deals on one of the many name-your-own-price websites such as Student Flights. However, with these types of websites, you often do not know the airline, or even the time your flight will leave until you commit to a non-refundable ticket. If you are the sort of person who wants to fly at a specific time, or on a specific airline, this service may not be right for you. Holidays are enticing only for the first week or so. After that, it is no longer such a novelty to rise late and have little to do. -- Margaret Laurence
