Staying at a Hostel Isn't for Everyone

The main reason most people stay at a hostel is limited financial resources. To put it another way, hostels are inexpensive. OK - let's just say it. Hostels are cheap!

The main reason most people stay at a hostel is limited financial resources. To put it another way, hostels are inexpensive. OK - let's just say it. Hostels are cheap!

If you're on a small budget, you won't have a lot of cash for taxis. Make sure that any hostel you choose is close to downtown and/or interesting tourist attractions.

Don't expect Jacuzzi tubs, private bathrooms, or chocolates on the pillows. The budget rates are generally accompanied by sparse accommodations with multiple beds per room. Many of the guests will be students or backpackers - which may mean late hours, partying, and loud music. (Many hostels prohibit these activities - check to be sure.)

Some hostels impose curfews. The type of curfew may vary from a 'be back by such-and-such a time' to 'doors are locked at such-and-such a time'. Once the doors are locked, you can't return to your room. Your bed and belongings will be inaccessible until the hostel reopens in the morning.

If you are a light sleeper, you might want to take earplugs with you! When you overnight with several people in the same room, the noises can sometimes escalate to undesireable levels.

Although a hostel won't have expensive amenities, you may find a lot of free extras such as:

• Complimentary shuttle service
• Free or cheap meals - or an onsite kitchen
• Free internet access
• Free tours
• Cable or satellite TV
• Computer-coded access doors
• Safe deposit boxes
. . . etc.

Reserve your room well in advance. If you don't, you might end up paying for a more expensive room in an inn or hotel (or worse yet, sleeping in the street).

Check hostel descriptions online very carefully. If there are guest reviews, read them. Choose a clean hostel with a good reputation. Many hostels are very homey and downright comfortable. Try to pick one that is part of a regulatory organization like Hostelling International.

Hostels may also go by other names: homestays, private hotels, guest houses, boarding houses, rooming houses, etc.

Some hostels request that you leave your passport at the front desk. Check hostel policies before you make a reservation.

And while we're talking about passports - make sure that you photocopy your passport and other important documents before you travel. Leave the photocopies with a trusted friend or relative in case of emergency. Some people actually computer-scan important documents and store them online as an e-mail attachment at one of the reputable internet e-mail services.

If you like meeting people, hostels are an attractive lodging choice! If you're a 'people person' seeking luxurious amenities and pampering, consider a bed and breakfast instead.

This page has a few more hostelling tips that may be helpful to you.
