|
Most of us have moved at least once in our lives. How do you get started with a moving checklist? It sounds simple enough: start from one corner of the house and add whatever comes to your mind as you move around the house. It is not quite so simple. By Abhishek Agarwal Most of us have moved at least once in our lives. We all know that preparing a checklist is an important thing to do. However, when you start preparing the list, it does not seem to end on one page, but goes on forever. Adding different items to the checklist is not limited to one person; everyone in the household keeps adding new items. With such a huge list, you are bound to forget one thing or another. How do you get started with your checklist? It sounds simple enough: start from one corner of the house and add whatever comes to your mind as you move around the house. Here are some tips that will help you prepare a moving checklist: One month before you move: 1. Start cleaning out areas such as basements, closets, garage etc. You can donate extra or unnecessary items to charity organizations. Consider holding a garage sale. This way, you can get rid of clutter and collect extra money to cover some of your moving costs. 2. Arrange for packing supplies. 3. Start packing items that are not daily-use items such as books, magazines, pictures, etc. 4. Every moving box should contain an attached list of items packed in the box. 5. Contact a reputable mover with good references and ask for estimated costs. 6. Prepare a list of all your anticipated expenses. 7. Transfer your current house insurance documents to your new house. Arrange for some overlap of coverage if necessary. Two weeks before you move: 8. Arrange for disconnects and reconnects for utilities, Internet, and telephone services. 9. Arrange to have your mail forwarded. 10. Transfer bank accounts. 11. Inform your family doctor and other important people about your move and give them your new address and phone numbers. One week before moving: 12. Start cleaning your house - either yourself or by using a cleaning service. You should also defrost the refrigerator and clean it. 13. Ask your children to return any borrowed items from the library, video store, etc. A few days before leaving: 14. Finish any remaining packing and marking of each box. 15. Put important documents and files such as insurance policies, x-rays, office-related documents, etc. in a separate marked box and place it in your car. 16. Keep a box marked as 'Open first' and include in it important items for daily use. 17. Leave appropriate appliance manuals behind. This list includes only a few tips, but it will help you think of other items. Moving is a hectic job, but once you move to your new home, you will appreciate the advance preparation of a checklist.
