Planning a Backpacking Trip? Top Five Backpacker Must-Dos
Do you want to include some thrilling adventures on your next backpacking trip? This article describes five places and activities for more daring backpackers. The mere descriptions will get your blood racing! Read on for more information ...

By Mathew Sabri

1. Sky-Diving

If you get back from a trip to Australia or New Zealand and you haven't thrown yourself out of a plane from at least 10,000 ft., then you haven't fully grasped the whole backpacker experience.

Both countries have more than their fair share of places to get extreme - but one of the most picturesque is Airlie Beach in Queensland, Australia. Although you can only jump from 10,000 ft, which is lower than many other places, this is a small price to pay when you see the views of the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Islands on your way back to earth.

2. Bungee Jumping

New Zealand, Land of the Long White Cloud, is the ultimate thrill-seeker destination. It is the home of commercial bungee jumping and in Queenstown on South Island, you can do the highest permanent bungee in the world.

The Nevis starts from a cable car, precariously suspended over a ravine. From here, you will dive down towards a ravine more than 140 meters below. You will fall to said ravine for 8.5 seconds, getting scarily close to the riverbed below, before bouncing back up to relative safety.

3. Shark Diving

Remaining south of the equator, South Africa is where you can get up close and personal with one of the world's most honed and perfectly adapted killing machines, the Great White Shark. Although this is not the most socially conscious adventure you can go on, since they actively bait the sharks, put your conscience to one side for a day to experience the mighty force that is the Great White.

The freezing and murky waters make the shark's unexpected appearance even more terrifying. Jaws music will stay in your head throughout the whole experience.

4. Machu Picchu

Scattered across its landscape, Latin America has some outstanding remains of long-gone civilization, and the best way to see them is on foot. The weeklong Inca trail is one of the best and despite the terrible conditions, the reward at the end makes this treacherous hike worth it. Machu Picchu is truly breathtaking and watching sunrise over the remains is a sight you will remember forever.

5. Mount Everest Base Camp

More trekking is required to get to Everest Base Camp. The landscape looks more fitted to another planet and is just as inhospitable, but this place is unbelievable inspiring.

You will walk through the Nepalese Himalayas, up mountains, through expansive valleys, and across vast glaciers seeing scenery unlike anywhere else on earth. All the while Sherpa and local Nepalese villagers make it look like a walk in the park, some park!

Before you even consider any of the above, make sure you have proper insurance. Throwing yourself out of a plane and swimming with sharks are obviously risky activities. Since backpackers have no spare money to deal with accidents, let alone emergency service sea-rescues and hospital bills, you need to insure against every possible calamity.
