It's No Secret: Cheap Holidays Are Better with a Budget
|
You must plan and research carefully to avoid breaking the bank for your holiday. Sticking to a budget can help you to avoid spending too much. You may also find hidden gems and more authentic dining choices and entertainment if you plan ahead. By Jennifer Smith If you vacation during the peak season, you'll find that tourist hot spots are overcrowded and packed and you get charged more for food and activities. Your bank account will also be sadly depleted if you take your holidays at this time of year. Make sure you plan and research carefully to avoid breaking the bank and to make everything fun-filled for all the family. Sticking to a budget can help you to avoid spending too much money on your trip. You may also find hidden gems and more authentic dining choices and entertainment if you plan ahead. Stay Outside of the City You can decide where you want to stay, once you obtain cheap flights. When booking your accommodation, decide whether you want to be in the heart of the city or in a more remote location. If you want to be in the center of the action where you can walk to shops, bars, restaurants, and other attractions, you might want to pay a slightly higher price for a room in the city. If your family plans on mostly lounging at the beach by your hotel, you can often get a less expensive hotel located farther from the city center. Check Out Local Entertainment There are local fairs, festivals, or markets to visit that will take you away from the shopping malls that lack authenticity. Local festivities let you truly explore the host country. They usually offer inexpensive -or even free - music, dancing, and food. Community markets allow you to purchase local handicrafts and food without the steep price tags that might accompany similar goods at the shopping mall. Travel During Off-Peak Times There are so many bonuses to traveling during off-peak time: fewer crowds, better weather, and a lot less expensive all round. Autumn and spring can be great times to visit a variety of different destinations, from sunny islands like Tenerife to exotic destinations like Sharm El Sheikh, part of the "Red Sea Riviera" in Egypt. Greece also makes a great fall get-away destination in late September and early October when the crowds thin out, but the water is still warm enough to enjoy swimming or water sports. Plan Ahead You can get the best value hotel, flights and dining options by planning ahead; ensuring your cheap holidays are the best holidays. Airline tickets usually get more expensive the closer you get to the time of your vacation, so buy them as early in the process as possible. Staying somewhat flexible about the exact dates can also help you get the best deals on flights. Eat Off the Beaten Path For an authentic dining experience, find out where the locals eat and avoid the tourist traps. Ask your hotel's proprietor for local restaurant recommendations where you can try authentic local cuisines. Visit the nearest grocery store to pick up picnic supplies, which you can then take to a park or another outdoor venue. If you do want to splurge on a pricey restaurant meal, go there for lunch instead of dinner. Many restaurants offer lunch menus that include items similar to those on their dinner menu, but at a significantly reduced price.
