How to Plan a Successful Family Road Trip
Family road trips do not need to strike fear in your heart if you ensure that they are coordinated properly. You cannot simply hop in the car and let the road be your guide. If you want to have a successful road trip, you need to plan carefully.

If you are one of the many millions of families in America that are thinking of taking a road trip for your family vacation this year, you may be experiencing a mix of emotions. For many, the thought of road trip planning makes their blood run cold. Perhaps you are on the other end of the spectrum though, and thinking of a family road trip gets your blood pumping with energy.

Family road trips do not need to strike fear in your heart if you ensure that they are coordinated properly. Gone are the days where you can simply hop in the car and let the road be your guide. If you want to have a successful road trip, you need to take steps to ensure that it happens. Every successful road trip comes with some careful and wise planning.

You and your family should have a checklist on hand for every step of your road trip - before, during, and after. Having checklists will organize your entire family and will save you not only time and unnecessary confusion, but can also work towards saving you some money on your vacation budget. Ensure that all family members who are old enough participate by preparing their own checklists, thus making the initial stages of the road trip much smoother.

Your vacation budget is going to be the first thing you will need to organize for your road trip. This will be your first checklist. You must prepare for where you will spend your money and when, and how much you will spend at each stop along the way. You may need to make an in-car snack list and prepare for a little grocery shopping before you depart. Having a cooler with refreshments and snacks in the vehicle on your road trip is a good idea. It will save you money compared to purchasing food along the way, and will save you time during your travels.

It is wise to have a list available for activities that you and your family can enjoy in the car while you are on the road. Create your own family travel guide or list for the trip. Encourage everyone to participate in this list. This way each family member will have an opportunity to add an activity that they will enjoy on the road. You can take turns on the road playing the activities - brother's turn, baby's turn, Mommy's turn, and so on. This makes for less squabbling, and gives everybody something to look forward to when it isn't his or her turn.

You will also need to have a detailed list of directions and specific travel plans. Nowadays there are many places online that you can go to in order to obtain your road trip travel guides. You can find directions, detailed maps, and specific timelines that will enable you to plan your route specifically for every day of your vacation. Having a travel guide readily available will be the most efficient road trip planning you can do.

I have been sick, really sick, on flights in the last few weeks. And, I have been amazed by the kindness of strangers. There is, indeed, something about vulnerability that helps us to connect with people - even when we're holding one of those little bags from the seat pocket of an airplane. -- Jan Denise
