 Family Vacations are Together Again
Family interest in spending time together while on vacation is beginning to increase. As interest increases, so are the opportunities and places where the family can take a break from the regular routine and spend some time bonding and sharing.

The family vacation was once a dying breed. Families may have gone to the same place together, but once there, they would each do their own thing. Some cruises and attractions even advertised as having activities for each member of the family - and not for the family as a whole.

Fortunately, those days are falling far behind us. The interest in spending time together while on vacation is beginning to increase. As interest increases, so are the opportunities and places where the family can take a break from the regular routine of the day and spend some time bonding and sharing together.

The key to being family-friendly is that many people can do it at the same time AND many different age groups can be accommodated. Usually the trip has to be catered to the youngest member of the family - which can limit the options from which you will be able to choose.

Summer camps are now opening up to the family. You stay together, eat together, and do traditional camp activities (like crafts, archery, or canoeing) and not so traditional activities (like rock climbing). The variety of opportunities is only limited by the place that you choose as your vacation retreat.

If you can't find a summer camp that will meet your needs, many resorts are learning that the family is a part of the travel industry that has been neglected. They are planning rooms around the idea that the family wants to be together and not trying to isolate the members from one another. There are also family-friendly activities available through (or around) the resorts.

Although larger cruises offer many individual activities, some of the smaller cruises are all about the group experience. You work together, play together, sleep together, and eat together. After a vacation like this, you will be well bonded as a family (and probably find alone places in the house when you get back).

Some travel companies are starting to offer getaway packages aimed specifically at the family. The adventurous outings usually target the older family (with children over 10), but a few allow younger children to participate.

The family vacation is no longer on the endangered species list. People are finding that the vacation can be a great time to grow closer as a family through bonding experiences or new adventures. The leisure services industry is finally catching on to the family's need to be together.
