More than three-fourths of the world is water and surprisingly, all of this area has been largely unexplored by man. Luckily, the exciting pastime of snorkeling has broken through this problem and introduced some of the most beautiful waters in the world to man's eyes.

Unfortunately, you cannot start getting your feet wet with just a swimming suit and a Billabong tank top. Snorkeling takes an array of specific equipment that will aid you in your adventure and, more importantly, keep you safe in unknown areas with mysterious creatures.

Here is a list of the equipment that you need before you start having fun in the water. Make sure that you have all of it before you go - or if you are following a guide, make sure that they provide you with all this necessary equipment.

Mask: This is probably one of the most important pieces of equipment because if you choose a good one, it will give you a great view of wherever you are swimming. Choosing a poor mask will cause problems and decrease the enjoyment of your trip.

Make sure to find a mask that gives you a very wide, clear view of everything around you. It is also important to find one that does not leak.

You can test to see if a faceguard has leaks even before you purchase it by looking at the material that it is made out of. Usually, a quality faceguard will have a stiff exterior but will have a flexible mold where it touches your face.

Test as well to see whether the mask will be a good fit once you start swimming with it. You can do this by putting it up to your face and breathing in once it is on your face.

If you can breathe in comfortably with the mask sticking to your face because of the pressure, then that means it is a good fit. If you have to strain to get it to stay, you should look elsewhere.

Snorkel: This is the piece of equipment that will enable you to breathe underwater. Having a quality one will ensure your safety because it will help you to breathe comfortably and avoid any problems.

The snorkel has two pieces that will be of interest to the buyer: the bore and the mouthpiece. The bore is the piece of the snorkel that extends upward to the surface of the water and allows you to breathe.

People of different sizes need different sizes of bores. For instance, you will need a bore with a larger diameter if you are a larger person so that you can breathe easier and have more airflow.

It is also important to check the mouthpiece for comfort when put it into your mouth. It would be a real pain to have a mouthpiece that does not fit once you are in the water.

Fins: These are not necessary for snorkeling, but they sure make it a much more thrilling experience. Fins can help propel you through the water faster, so you can spend more time looking at the scenery rather than worrying about kicking your legs for speed.

There are two types of fins: open-heel and full-foot.

Open-heel fins work much like a sandal. You put your foot into an adjustable rubber strap that keeps your foot within the fin. It leaves your toes and heel exposed, which could be a hazard depending on the type of waters in which you are swimming.

A full-foot fin protects your entire foot but is harder to put on and take off because of this. The one you choose depends on your preference of style.

Vests: These are used to help swimmers improve their flotation in the water. They are not supposed to be used as life vests, however.

Snorkel vests are optimal for children or adults who are not the strongest of swimmers. This will give them the added help they need.

Other pieces of equipment may be desirable for snorkeling, but these are the must-haves. Make sure you have all these great tools in your possession before you go out on that great adventure!

It has long been my belief that in times of great stress, such as a 4-day vacation, the thin veneer of family wears off almost at once, and we are revealed in our true personalities. -- Shirley Jackson
