A Perfect Example of How to Get into Trouble at the Border
Anyone can be detained at the border, regardless of whether they are innocent or not. Keep in mind that you can be held for 24 to 48 hours if the guard suspects you are trying to hide something. This article describes an example of what NOT to do.

I have been going back and forth between the US and Canada for many years, ever since I first met my wife. She and I have literally crossed the border more times than I can actually count since we have been together, and in almost every case we have not had any problems at all. We occasionally have had to deal with a miserable or nasty guard, or a routine inspection that just about everybody has to go through.

However, we have never been detained for anything we have said or done, which is something that can happen to just about anybody, regardless of whether you are innocent or not. Keep in mind that you can be held for 24 to 48 hours and have your car literally ripped apart, if the guard suspects you are trying to hide something. That is why it is best to keep your nerves under control whenever you are answering their questions and you must always be respectful.

I recently listened to an audio of a man who got himself into major trouble at the border because he was being a complete and total bonehead, and lost respect for the guards. This man and his wife were going shopping in New York at an outlet mall. The guard asked them a few routine questions, and when he asked what stores they planned on shopping at, the man got very belligerent. He told the guard that it didn't really matter, and this essentially is what got him sent into the security office for further questioning.

At this point, the man started to become really stupid and asked his interviewer if he thought he was a terrorist. Eventually, more guards were brought in and the man's wife actually grabbed one of them, when the man made a silly threat. He ended up having to spend the next 48 hours being detained, because he refused to answer a simple question.

This is a perfect example of how, even though you might be innocent, you can get yourself into major trouble when you are at the border. You must never talk back to the guards or do anything that will aggravate or upset them. Don't challenge them, as it is a battle you cannot win.

They have absolute power, and they can basically send you into the security office on a whim.

So remember, be respectful and answer all of their questions to the best of your knowledge. Never refuse to answer the question they ask you, even if you think it is silly or not relevant.
